The P-1A visa is available to internationally recognized athletes who are coming to the United States temporarily to participate in a specific athletic competition or event.
To be eligible for a P-1A visa, the athlete must have achieved high recognition in their sport and must be coming to the U.S. to participate in a specific competition or event that requires their participation. The athlete must also have a contract or other agreement with a team or organization sponsoring their participation in the competition or event.
Additionally, the athlete must be able to provide documentation to demonstrate their international recognition in their sport. This may include awards, rankings, and other types of recognition from reputable international sports organizations.

The P-1A visa is only available for temporary stays in the United States for the specific event or competition for which the athlete is coming. If the athlete intends to stay in the U.S. longer, they may need to apply for a different type of visa.
To apply for a P-1A visa, the athlete’s sponsor, such as the sports team or organization, must file a petition on their behalf with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The petition should include documentation to demonstrate the athlete’s eligibility for the visa, including evidence of their international recognition in their sport and their contract or agreement with the sponsoring team or organization.

Once the petition is approved, the athlete can then apply for the P-1A visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate in their home country. The athlete must provide additional documentation, such as a valid passport, proof of their ties to their home country, and evidence of their intention to return home after the competition or event.

Athletes need to apply for the P-1A visa as early as possible. The processing time can vary depending on the circumstances and the workload of the USCIS and the embassy or consulate.

Once the athlete enters the United States on a P-1A visa, they are authorized to participate in the specific competition or event for which the visa was granted. If the athlete wishes to participate in additional events or competitions, they may need to apply for a new visa or seek an extension of their P-1A visa.

During their stay in the United States, P-1A visa holders are generally not permitted to engage in other work or employment. However, they may receive compensation for their participation in the competition or event and related promotional activities, such as press conferences and endorsements.

The P1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa category designed for internationally recognized athletes, entertainers, or members of an entertainment group. To be eligible for a P1 visa, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Professional athletes are recognized internationally for their skills in sports such as basketball, football, baseball, hockey, or soccer.
  • Individual athletes are recognized for their achievements in sports such as tennis, golf, swimming, or track and field.
  • Members of national sports teams who are participating in international competitions, such as the Olympics or the World Cup.
  • Coaches and trainers who are recognized internationally for their expertise in a particular sport.
  • Referees and judges who are recognized for their skills in officiating sports competitions.
  • Entertainers who are participating in sports-related shows or events, such as halftime shows or pre-game performances.

The visa type that is most appropriate for the client dramatically depends on the title of the applicant, the background of the applicant, and what the applicant will be doing over the validity period of the P-1 or O-1 Visa.

P-1A beneficiaries must establish at least two of the following:

  • Evidence that the beneficiary (or their team) has previous participation in a major U.S. team or league;
  • Evidence that the beneficiary (or their team) has previous participation in a national team for international competition;
  • Evidence that the beneficiary (or their team) has previous participation with a U.S. college or university in intercollegiate competition;
  • A detailed written statement from an official of a major U.S. sports league or team regarding the beneficiary’s international recognition, individually or as a team;
  •  A detailed written statement from a sports media official or a recognized expert in the sport regarding the beneficiary’s international recognition, individually or as a team;
  •  Evidence or proof of having received international rankings, if any;
  • Evidence or proof that the beneficiary received a significant honor or award in your sport.

Essential documentation required for a successful P1 Visa application:

To apply for a P1 visa, applicants will need to provide the following documents and information:

  1. Form I-129: The P1 visa application must be submitted using Form I-129, Petition for Nonimmigrant Worker. This form must be filed by a U.S. employer, agent, or sponsor who is petitioning for the applicant’s entry.
  2. Supporting Documentation: Applicants must provide documentation that supports their eligibility for the P1 visa. This may include evidence of their international recognition, such as awards, press clippings, or other proof of their achievements in their field.
  3. Contract or Itinerary: Applicants must provide a copy of their contract with the U.S. employer or agent or a detailed itinerary of their activities while in the United States.
  4. Passport: Applicants must have a valid passport that is valid for at least six months beyond their intended period of stay in the United States.
  5. Photographs: Applicants must provide two identical passport-style photographs.
